“From experience, we know what to expect…

For almost 20 years I have worked in the area of trauma and grief. More specifically I have worked with law enforcement administrators and officers in helping them deal with their critical incidents, serious officer injury or line of duty deaths.

The impact of a line-of-duty death is widespread – overwhelming nearly every member of that department, including each officer’s spouse and family member with acute pain and traumatic stress reactions.

“For a small number of individuals, the fallout will not be limited to short-term traumatic stress reactions. They will go on to develop long-term impairment, such as PTSD.These individuals rarely receive crisis assistance, because they are often someone we would least expect to need help.”

Chaplain David Fair, Ph.D.

Chaplain David Fair

David Fair, a police chaplain and internationally recognized expert in post-traumatic stress, has had his crisis intervention skills battle-hardened at our nation’s most horrifying tragedies, including the Luby’s Massacre at Killeen, the Oklahoma City Bombing and the September 11th terrorist attacks.

    CRISIS INTERVENTION

In the months to come, the AAPO will rely on Fair’s counsel as the association works to fulfill one of its core goals -- protecting the physical and mental health of our nation’s police officers. Most recently, AAPO is sponsoring Fair’s crisis intervention mission to New Orleans, where he reached out to first responders as they confronted the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

SGT. JOHN COOLEY, LAPD (retired)

A 30 year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department, John Cooley has coordinated over 80 police funeral and memorial services. Throughout his career and into retirement, John has dedicated himself to raising the professional standards by which departments honor and lay to rest our fallen heroes.

    EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS

PPF is proud to sponsor John Cooley’s Educational Seminars for law enforcement organizations and agencies. John is available to any law enforcement agency, group or organization for presentations on planning, managing, coordinating line-of-duty funerals and developing comprehensive protocols and guidelines directed specifically to meet agency needs.

John recently addressed a gathering of the International Police Chaplains Conference.
