The Problem
Americans are TEXTING, sharing on FACEBOOK, checking their EMAIL and often while behind the wheel of an automobile.
Law enforcement has never witnessed anything quite like the reckless destruction caused by drivers distracted by text messaging on mobile devices.
Careless drivers have become the leading cause of death for public safety officers.
“Nearly every officer knows someone who has been injured or killed by a careless driver. ”
Countless officers have experienced the danger of nearly being hit. Every officer knows someone who has been injured or killed by a careless driver.
Law enforcers routinely experience a narrow margin of error when working along the roadway. It is a growing source of stress in an already stressful profession.
Some Solutions
Our ongoing nationwide campaign seeks to reverse grim statistics and replace "haste" with "safe" - helping to restore civility to the nation’s roadways.
The campaign also directs citizens to visit us online where they will find additional information highlighting the dangers officers face, along with safety strategies for motorists.
The PROCEED WITH CAUTION’s strategy is to remind motorists to drive at speeds appropriate to the conditions and to emphasize the dangers of distracted driving, especially when public safety officials are in the roadway.
Program reminds drivers that even relatively small increases in speed can have significant life & death consequences:
If a public safety officer is hit by a car traveling 40 m.p.h. or faster, there's a 70% chance that a struck pedestrian will be killed; at 30 m.p.h., there's an 80% chance that the pedestrian will live.
Test the power of our campaign yourself. The next time you approach flashing lights and public safety personnel in the roadway, see if you don’t think: “PROCEED WITH CAUTION”! It may only be for a few seconds, but this brief window of time can save lives.
PROCEED WITH CAUTION is sponsored by the Police Protective Fund, a non-profit organization.
