CHIEF TOM CLEMONS
Austin, TX (October 7, 2010) - PoliceUSA.com and the Police Protective Fund (a 501c3 non profit corporation) today announced that Tom Clemons, Chief of Police of Seward, Alaska has accepted an invitation to join the organization’s Board of Directors.
Chief Clemons has served for many years on the Advisory Council of one of PoliceUSA’s most successful programs, the Junior Police Academy. He credits the program with making a profound impact on the youth of Alaska in the schools of both Wrangell and Seward.
“As Chief of Police, I strive to be pro active in my community. I build trust with the citizens I serve,” said Chief Clemons. “The Junior Police Academy gives me the opportunity to start building that trust early on with the youth.”
“I want my retirement to be in good shape, so I invest in our youth,” Clemons added. “They are my IRA. They are my retirement account. They will be the next police chiefs, lawyers, pilots, mayors and community leaders.”
“We are all honored to have someone of Tom’s stature within the law enforcement community join the Board,” said Executive Officer Phillip LeConte. “Tom is a good friend and possesses a quality that sometimes seems anachronistic in today’s world — quiet
integrity.”
“When we first developed the course content for Junior Police Academy, our intention was not so much to teach kids about public safety, but rather to introduce them to police officers like Tom Clemons,” added LeConte. “Public safety issues are the topic of discussion, but what we really cultivate is common sense and kind instincts — qualities great police officers personify in the classroom. Tom has always understood this. He will be instrumental in taking JPA to a whole new level.”
Chief Tom Clemons began his distinguished career in law enforcement in 1972 with the Petersburg Police Department (Alaska), where he was eventually promoted to the rank of sergeant.
In 1974, Chief Clemons joined the Alaska State Troopers. During his tenure with the Troopers, Chief Clemons was stationed in Anchorage, Juneau, Palmer and Paxson (during the pipeline construction years); as well as being assigned to the Criminal Investigation Bureau.
After retiring from the Alaska State Troopers in 1995, Chief Clemons worked briefly in the private sector before returning to law enforcement in 1998 when he accepted the position of Chief of Police for the Sand Point Police Department.
In 2000, Chief Clemons became the Chief of Police for the community of Wrangell, Alaska, before moving to Seward in 2003 where he is the current Chief.
CLEMONS POSES WITH JUNIOR POLICE ACADEMY CADETS.
Additionally, Chief Clemons is President of the Alaska Association of Chiefs of Police and serves on the Executive Committee of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
The former Vice Chair for Alaska Police Standards Council, a Life Member of Alaska Peace Officer’s Association, and LEEDA, Chief Clemons has served on the advisory groups of Dare Alaska, Junior Police Academy, Western States COPS Program, SEAVIEW of Seward, Alaska Law Enforcement Information Sharing System (ALEISS) and as Chairman of the Alaska Municipal League Law Enforcement Liability Pool.
He currently serves as Chair for the State Association of Chiefs of Police (SACOP) Mountain Pacific Region and is the representative for the Pacific Mountain Region committee, which serves smaller departments with 25 commissioned members or less. He is Past President of both theSeward Lions Club and the Seward Rotary Club.
